Luna’s Story

Cute little Luna was a 1-year-old black and tan smooth miniature

female dachshund when her concerned owner called us for help.

She had an older Labrador retriever that was consistently

trying to injure Luna. Luna weighed only 6 ½ pounds so this

was a serious concern. The owner had worked hard to divide the

house in half so each dog could have part of the house, but this

was proving unsustainable, in the long term, for her and her

family. At that point, we agreed to accept Luna into our rescue

program.

Thankfully, Luna had been generally well cared for and only

needed routine vet care including vaccines, spay surgery and a

microchip. Former adopters were ready for a young dachshund

and, when they met Luna, they quickly fell in love. We were not

surprised! Luna has settled in beautifully and made friends with

their older dachshund (also adopted from us). Her new family

reports she has the perfect blend of energy—happy to run and

play but also willing to cuddle up with them on the couch. Live

long and prosper Luna!

DACHSHUND FACTS

In Germany, the Dachshund is also called the Teckel.

A Miniature Dachshund typically weighs 11 pounds or less as an adult.

The Wirehaired Dachshund is covered with a coarse, wiry coat like those of most terrier breeds and is distinguished by their well defined eyebrows and beards.

Despite their small size, Dachshunds are extremely courageous.

There are 3 types of coat varieties in the Dachshund - Smooth, Longhair and Wirehair.

A "piebald" Dachshund has patterns like a Beagle or Basset Hound with large regular patches of white.

Dachshunds love to be with people. If you want to be followed everywhere you go, then the Dachshund is the dog for you!

Black & Tan Dachshunds have tan markings on their head, chest, and paws.
