RESCUE - Dallas Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation
The Dallas Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation is a registered non-profit organization originally formed as part of the Dallas Fort Worth Dachshund Club, Inc. The Club members, as stewards of the breed, felt a responsibility to assist in the re-homing of Dachshunds who were owner surrenders or rescued from unfortunate situations.
For many reasons, the Rescue has evolved into a separate non-profit organization. Its board are still members of the Dallas Fort Worth Dachshund Club, Inc. but it is supported by many volunteers who are integral parts of the Foundation.

RESCUE Q&A
Where do your rescued dachshunds come from?
In prior years, most of our rescued dachshunds came from municipal animal shelters, as at that point many shelters did not have robust adoption programs. These days, viable dachshunds needing homes that end up at municipal shelters will be adopted out by the shelter, and rarely come to our rescue program. Instead, most of our dogs come from private owners who must surrender their dog or a dog of an elderly family member for various reasons. We also do get calls for assistance from small rural shelters that do not have a strong adoption programs.
Are the rescue dogs house trained?
Their housetraining has been started and is good in their foster homes. That won’t necessarily transfer immediately to an adopter’s home but you will be given hints and tips as to how to continue the training.
Why aren’t there any photos of available dogs?
We post our available dogs on our petfinder site:
We usually do not post dogs for adoption until most of their vet work and training has been completed. This way, we have a better idea on what type of home might be the best match for a given dog. Check our petfinder site from time to time and you will see updates.
How do I apply for a rescued dog?
E-mail us at:
coordinator@dfwdachshundrescuetexas.com and provide us with your name and postal address and we will send you an application. We only send our applications by postal mail.
How old are these dogs?
Dogs in our program are between 1 and 7 years of age. We rarely have puppies, and when we do - there is a long, already approved waiting list for puppies. We have 5 dogs in our senior sanctuary program-these dogs are too old to be adopted so each lives permanently with a designated foster parent. Vet care is provided by the foundation. We do not have space for more than 5 senior sanctuary dogs, so an opening only occurs when one of these dogs passes away.
Have these dogs been abused?
Most dogs coming to us have been neglected; lacking either appropriate vet care or training. While this is sad, we nearly always able to address these types of issues. Only occasionally do we have a dog coming to us that has been abused.
Can I adopt a dog even though I live in another city/state?
The foundation’s adoption program is local to the DFW and immediately surrounding area. If you live in another city or state, you can contact us for referrals to rescue programs in your area that we may know of.
How much does it cost to adopt a rescue dog?
Our adoption fee is $250. Each dog is spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, tested and treated (if needed) for parasite, tested and treated (if needed) for heartworms, has a complete blood panel, is microchipped, has teeth cleaned (if needed) and any other health issues are fully addressed and disclosed to the adopter.
I don’t want to adopt but how else can I help?
We welcome donations of money that help with vet work for the rescue dogs, and are also grateful for donations of dog items that someone no longer needs (i.e., crates, bedding, medication, etc)
You can make a pay pal donation via this link:
And if you have donated items, either call us at 817-481-9272 or email us at: coordinator@dfwdachshundrescuetexas.com
and we will arrange to get the items from you.
ADPOTION POLICY
Please be aware that our adoption applications are sent out by postal mail only and are not sent by e-mail nor are they available on-line.
Be aware that we do not have a public kennel facility for our dogs; our rescue dogs are fostered with individual families throughout the DFW Metroplex area. We do not permit visits to any of the rescue dogs until an interested household has filled out an application, and had a reference, vet and home check. Only screened and approved applicants may visit dogs available for adoption through our program. We will not hold dogs for homes that have not yet been approved by our rescue committee.
We rarely, if ever, have puppies available in our rescue program. If you are interested in a puppy, please contact us for the puppy referral packet to reputable breeders.
In order to be considered for adoption through DFW Dachshund Rescue Foundation, you must:
-
Be over 21 years of age and have verifiable identification to that effect.
-
Be able to verify that you may have a pet where you live.
-
Live within the immediate Dallas/Fort Worth area. We appreciate your understanding and hope that, if you live outside this area, you will consider adopting a pet from a rescue group that services your particular geographic area.
-
Be prepared to make a donation to our rescue efforts of $250.
-
Be willing to fill out an adoption application, the entire contents of which will be verified upon receipt.
-
Be aware that vet references will be verified to confirm current pets are altered, up to date on vaccinations as well as being annually tested for heartworms and regularly taking heartworm preventative.
-
Have a complete, secure, and safely fenced yard.
-
Be prepared to have a home visit from one of the rescue foundation members as part of the screening process to adopt this dog. During the home visit, our representative will do a brief temperament evaluation of all current dogs in the household.
We are unable to adopt to homes where any current dogs exhibit people-aggressive or dog - aggressive behaviors during the home visit. In addition, while we do not preclude adopters who currently own large breed dogs, due to size differential and a dachshund's predisposition to spinal injuries, we are also not able to adopt to homes when the board determines there may be potential for injury to the dachshund. This is to ensure a safe match for our rescued dachshunds.
Understand that DFW Dachshund Rescue Foundation has the right to deny any application.
Our adoption application has been designed to evaluate potential adopters to ensure that each person who adopts a dachshund is not only aware of the responsibility that comes with adopting a dog, but also to address the suitability and permanence of each dachshund placed in a new home.
When considering a new home, our goal is to make the best possible match for each of our rescued dachshunds. These special dogs deserve the stability of a permanent home where they will be loved, secure and safe for their rest of their lives.
If you are interested in adopting one of the dachshunds in our rescue program, please call us at
(817) 481-9272 or email us at coordinator@dfwdachshundrescuetexas.com for an application.
It will be sent out to you via postal mail, as it is not available online. Once your application has been received, we will check your vet references, and schedule a home visit.
If there is no information in an email sent to us we will assume it is spam and delete/block the address from which it came.
We currently have no dogs in the program!! If you submit an application, please note you will be put on a waiting list and we will contact you if we have dogs available that will fit your needs.
